SIOUX CITY | The Woodbury County Board of Supervisors has promoted Melissa Thomas to director of the Human Resources Department.
Thomas, who previously served as the department's administrative assistant, will succeed director Ed Gilliland, who in October announced he would retire from county work at the end of this year.
Woodbury County Board Chairman Matthew Ung on Monday announced the promotion of Thomas, who has worked in the department since 2011.
Ung said several finalists for the director position were interviewed by the county supervisors.
“For over six years, Melissa has worked her way through the department, holding three positions, each with increased responsibilities within the office. I believe this gives her a uniquely broad perspective that results in effective delegation, continuous communication and a proactive attitude,” Ung said in a news release.
Thomas earned her bachelor’s degree in human resources from Bellevue University. She served as human resources manager of Opportunities Unlimited until 2011.
“I am honored to be given the opportunity to lead Woodbury County’s Human Resources Department and look forward to the challenges this position holds and will do my best for the employees and citizens of the county," Thomas said in a statment.
The annual salary for Thomas will be $64,000.
Gilliland became the department's director in 2014. Gilliland told the Journal he plans to stay in the area, where he has lived and worked for 30 years, and find other employment.
