SIOUX CITY | Hot, sticky weather conditions will return to Siouxland today. They might be followed up with one of the best chances for rain the area has seen in some time.
First, Siouxlanders need to weather another steamy day. Sioux City's high temperature today is forecast at 95 degrees. High humidity will combine to raise the heat index to 101 degrees. Wind gusts up to 25-30 mph may help the conditions feel a little less hot.
A break from the heat and humidity is set to arrive late tonight. Thunderstorms are expected to move into the area after midnight and into Wednesday morning.
"Chances have definitely increased since yesterday," said Matthew Dux, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.
Dux said the storms will be scattered throughout the area, so it's hard to say how much rain Sioux City might receive.
The storms will usher in cooler conditions for the remainder of the week. Wednesday is expected to be cloudy with a high of 80 degrees. Highs for the remainder of the week should be in the low 80s. After Wednesday, there is no rain in the forecast until a slight chance for scattered showers Saturday into Sunday.
"Probably the best chance for rain in the next seven days is tonight and into tomorrow morning," Dux said.
