Jules was born on March 25, 1927, in Akron, Iowa, the son of Axel and Margaret (Gleason) Bay. He graduated from Akron High School. After working for a short time, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served on the USS Montrose.
Jules married Darlene B. Higgins on April 18, 1949, in Sioux City. They had 65 years together. Brownie and Darlene loved to go dancing at the Eagles Club and cut a rug almost every weekend.
He worked for the Sioux City Fire Department for 18 years before retiring due to injuries. After retirement, he worked for Schoenemen's Lumber and had several other odd jobs.
He was a longtime member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He enjoyed working Sunday night bingo games, playing cards, and spending time with his family and friends visiting and creating new memories. Most of all, family held a special place in his heart; his boys and their wives, grandkids and great-grandkids.
Jules is survived by four sons, Douglas Bay (Denise), Timothy Bay (Kathy), Larry Bay (Joanne), all of Sioux City, and Gregory Bay (Barbara) of Elkhorn, Neb.; one sister, Claire Thuringer of Sioux City; 12 grandchildren, Ron Bay (Katie), Lindsey Tarno (Robbie), Heather Petersen, Brandon Petersen (Nicole), Austin Bay, Meghan Robertson, Mamie Combs, Mariha Combs, Mckenzi Bay, Dylan Bay, Lexi Bay and Emily Bay; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Jules was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Darlene; son Ronald; five brothers; two sisters; and a grandson, Tyler.
