SIOUX CITY | A Sergeant Bluff man on Thursday pleaded guilty to stealing items at least 22 times from the mail while working for the U.S. Postal Service.

Kirk Baird, 42, entered his plea in U.S. District Court in Sioux City to one count of theft of mail by a postal service employee.

Baird admitted in court that from August to October, he removed cash and gift cards from items in the mail.

A sentencing date has yet to be set. According to a plea agreement, federal prosecutors will recommend to the sentencing judge that Baird be placed on probation, though the judge could decide to impose a prison sentence of up to five years. Baird has agreed to pay at least $707 in restitution. He also could be subject to a fine of up to $250,000.
