Search for missing kayaker

Divers search for a missing canoer at Snyder Bend Park, near Salix, Iowa, Tuesday morning. The man, whose body was found later in the day, has been identified as Ronald Cooper, 70, of Sergeant Bluff.

SALIX, Iowa -- Authorities have released the identity of the man whose body was recovered from the lake at Snyder Bend Park on Tuesday.

Ronald Cooper, 70, of Sergeant Bluff, was found in the water around noon on Tuesday. It's believed he went missing Monday while canoeing at the park.

According to a Woodbury County Sheriff's Office news release, the medical examiner has not yet released the cause of death to authorities. The incident remains under investigation.

Investigators had discovered an upside-down canoe and personal belongings near the scene after receiving an alert about a missing man at 5:15 p.m. Monday. They called off the search after dark Monday night and resumed Tuesday morning.

Initial reports said that a kayak had been involved. The sheriff's office said on Wednesday that it was a canoe.

Assisting agencies included Woodbury County Conservation, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Salix Fire Department, Sioux City Police and the Sioux City Dive Team.
