RoJean Elsie Anderson, 81, of Dahlonega, Ga., formerly Sioux City, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019, in Dahlonega.
Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Sunset Memorial in Albuquerque, N.M. Arrangements are under the direction of McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Cumming, Ga.
RoJean was born June 30, 1938, to Richard and Alice Labrune, in Sioux City.
She is survived by her children, Guy (Debbie) Anderson of El Paso, Texas, Shirley (Paul) Nunez of Cumming, Ga., and Joseph (Margaret) Anderson of Milwaukee, Wis.; one sister, Sharon Mercer of Albuquerque, N.M.; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Virgil W. Jensen, 88, of Kingsley, formerly of Cushing, passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019, at Kingsley Specialty Care of Kingsley.
Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing, with the Rev. Tami Groth officiating. Burial will be in Cushing Cemetery at Cushing, with military rites conducted by F. Virgil W. Jensen was born Oct. 12, 1930, to August and Esther (Ericksen) Jensen in Holstein, Iowa. He graduated from Holstein High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
On Jan. 18, 1953, he was united in marriage to Jean Grell. The couple farmed north of Cushing until his retirement in 2001. In June of 2004, the couple purchased a home in Kingsley, and he lived out his years there.
Virgil was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein, then later became a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing. He served on the church council for several years. He was a member of the American Legion where he served as a past commander.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jean; four children, Marcia of Storm Lake, Iowa, Brenda of Sioux City, Brent (Cheryl) of Lawton, Iowa, and Brian (Loyanne) of Lawton; four grandchildren, Brittney Jensen, Alex Jensen, Ben Jensen and Sophia Jensen. He is also survived by his sister, Loretta Rath of Aurelia, Iowa; brother, Roger (Sylvia) Jensen of Sac City, Iowa; sister-in-law, JoAnn Friedrichsen of Holstein; a brother-in-law, Tom (Shirley) Conover of Holstein; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Jensen; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Conover and Dorothy Grell; and brothers-in-law, LaVerne Grell, Orville Friedrichsen and Vernon Rath.

Ronald S. "Ron" Stephan, 78, of South Sioux City, took his last earthly cruise on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019, with his proud, loving family watching his route.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with Pastor Fred Sundt officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a Remembrance service beginning at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Family suggests casual attire be worn, and Hot Rods Welcome. Ron was born on March 22, 1941, in Hubbard, Ne., to Samuel S. and Faye V. (Newman) Stephan. He received his education in South Sioux City Public Schools. Ron married Kathleen “Kay” Franks on Nov. 27, 1959, in South Sioux City. He made a career in working at Sturdevant’s Auto Supply, Sioux Plating, Lahann Body Shop, and Stephan Welding. Ron loved his cars, building Hot Rods, watching stock car races with his brother, nephew, and grandson, and cleaning lawn mowers. He was on the Western Iowa Tech Automotive Advisory Board, and a member of the United Methodist Church.
Ron is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kay of South Sioux City; daughters, Tracia Blom of South Sioux City, Terri Lahn and her husband, Eugene of South Sioux City, and Tammi Gorski and her husband, Scott of Sioux City; son, Todd Stephan and his wife, Wendy of Fort Dodge, Iowa; 10 wonderful grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph (Cleo) Stephan of South Sioux City; sisters-in-law, Kay Harder of Ponca, Neb., Barb Stephan of South Sioux City, and Susan (LeRoy) Kotula of Georgia; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and great friends.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ramona Stephan Rohde; brother, Richard Stephan; and mother-in-law, Pearl Poole Franks.
Pallbearers for the service will be Ron’s grandsons, Josh Blom, Zachary Bata, Seth Blom, Drew Lahn, Brenndan Gorski, and Caden Stephan, while his granddaughters, Asia Lahn, Aspen (Stephan) Cloninger, Jordan (Gorski, and Baylie (Stephan) Peck, will be Honorary Pallbearers.
Ron’s family wishes to offer a special “Thank You” to Nurse Jean French, and the wonderful, caring Hospice of Siouxland team.

Loretta Annabelle Johnson, 96, lifelong resident of Sioux City, died on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, 1801 Morningside Ave., with Chaplain Jon Moravec of Sunrise Retirement Community officiating. Loretta was born Dec. 11, 1922, in Sioux City, to Joseph and Dora (Ferdig) Sales. She grew up attending Sioux City Schools, graduating from East High School in 1941. Loretta married Jess S. Johnson on Dec. 22, 1941, in South Sioux City, Neb. The couple had two children, Jesse R. and Grace Ann. Loretta was employed by Sears Department Stores as a credit manager, retiring in 1987.
Loretta was a Past Matron of the Morningside Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. In 1992, she was the Grand Electra of Iowa Order of the Eastern Star, member of the Daughters of the Nile, Mispah Shrine (White Shrine) Past President, Hathor Patrol. She was a member of the Sioux City Women's Club, and was a Past President of Credit Women International.
She was a member of Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Loretta had such a vibrant, fun-loving personality. She loved her family and friends with all her heart, always willing to help anyone along the way, using her many talents including party planning, making ceramics, flower arrangements, nut cups, even writing poems and scripts for skits and plays. Eastern Star was a huge part of her life where she and her husband started a spaghetti dinner fundraiser that continued for 50 years. She loved making peanut brittle to help benefit the Shrine children, making sure her family knew how, in order to carry on that tradition for their families.
Loretta was the center of her family always giving her best and expecting nothing less in return. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Loretta and Jess are dancing together once again.
Surviving are son, Jesse R. (Carla) Johnson of Sioux City; daughter, Grace A. (Frank) Fulton II of Spirit Lake, Iowa; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Patty Sales; numerous nieces and nephews; along with a multitude of friends.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Flossie Riese, Lucy Norton, Velma Sutherland and Grace Stark; and three brothers, Clarence, Joe "Brud" and Carl.

Shelly Rae Martens was born on Nov. 26, 1962, in Sioux City, to Marven and Shirley (Eufers) Martens. She attended school at Immaculate Conception Grade School and Bishop Heelan High School, where she graduated in 1981. She attained her bachelors of arts in accounting from Briar Cliff University. She spent 12 years as an accountant with First Federal Bank, and in later years, worked for both Fareway and K-Mart. She was currently employed at Walgreens.
Shelly was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church throughout her life, and was incredibly proud of her strong faith and relationship with the Lord our Father.
She is survived by her brother, Jeffrey Martens; uncle, Bedford "Bep" Robinson; uncle, Dan McCarthy; uncle, Dwaine and aunt, Marjeanne Gastro; and many other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marven and Shirley Martens.

Margaret Evelyn 'Peg' Winterlin, 94, of Bloomington, formerly Sioux City, was welcomed to her heavenly home on Oct. 8, 2019.
Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bloomington Covenant Church in Bloomington, Minn. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery at Sioux City, Iowa. Visitation with family present will be one hour preceding the funeral service.
Peg was born the daughter of Hulda (Shogren) Gustavson and John Gustavson on Sept. 7, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio. Peg married William Winterlin Jr. on Sept. 7, 1949, in Youngstown. The couple made their home in Sioux City, Iowa, for nearly 65 years.
Peg stayed home with their two sons, Gordon and Roger, while they were young and later was the secretary for the Sioux City Public Museum for over 25 years.
Peg was a loving wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma and a great-great-grandma. She was an amazing cook and baker who loved to host family and friends in their home and at their lakeside cabin near Bemidji, Minn.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Sioux City, and was the church organist for many years. Peg enjoyed traveling and making memories with her husband, Bill. They traveled often with Bill’s brothers and wives.
Peg is survived by two sons, Gordon (Paula) Winterlin of Bloomington, Minn., and Roger (Joanie) Winterlin of Waconia, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Sheryl (Lawrence) O’Connor of Elk River, Minn., Jennifer Tostenson of Mankato, Minn., Daniel (Sarah) Winterlin of Eden Prairie, Minn., Jessica (Richard) Hoffman of Bloomington, Jeffrey (Sheana) Winterlin of Richfield, Minn., Brian (Sheri) Winterlin of Billings, Mont., and Timothy (Maggie) Winterlin of Hooper, Neb.; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one brother-in-law, Wray (Arlene) Winterlin of Davis, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Donald Gustavson; and two sisters-in-law, Elsie Gustavson and Leona Winterlin.

Jacqueline "Jackie" Kay (Davis) Millet, 69, of Jamaica Queens, formerly Sioux City, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019, at her home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with Pastor Elaine Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Logan Park Cemetery. Jackie was born Jan. 12, 1950, to Cecil (deceased) and Mildred Davis in Sioux City. She attended public school, graduating from Central High School in 1968. Jackie then went on to a local business school obtaining a secretarial degree.
Jackie accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
She was a gifted musician. Jackie played piano and organ for the Mount Zion Junior Choir. She played clarinet in the Central High School Marching Band. Additionally, she sang with the Sioux City Municipal Choir.
Jackie moved from Sioux City to New York shortly after her business degree graduation. She held several clerical positions before she began working for New York State. She rose through the ranks of the Bernard Fineson Developmental Disabilities Services to become a Group House Manager overseeing three homes. After 38 years of service, she retired. She was now able to travel, one of her dreams, both inside and outside the United States. She was a constant participant at the Ollison-Ellis Family reunions which allowed her to travel to various states such as Iowa, Colorado, Arkansas, Texas, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Outside of the U.S., she visited Guyana, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Cozumel, St Lucia, St. Maarten, Aruba, Grenada, Cancun and other countries.
Jackie was always jovial, literally the life of the party. She never met a stranger. She was a loyal friend and a great confidante, and an effective leader. She trained herself to find the blessing in every situation. Jackie knew that someday everything would make sense, but in the meantime she laughed at the confusion, smiled through the tears, always knowing that everything happened for a reason and in God’s timing.
Left to mourn her is her loving husband, Cedric; two sons, William Shawn Davis and Marcus Davis; three grandchildren, Jacqueline Ann Davis, Arlando Davis, and Jamal Davis; one great-grandson, Caiden Davis; mother, Mildred Davis; sister, Gwendolyn Warren; mother-in-law, Sybil Millet; nephews, extended family, and friends.

Betty Lou V. Bauerly, 91, of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at a local care facility.

Betty Lou Virginia LaBahn was born on March 23, 1928, in Burke, Lucas County, S.D., to Louis and Bessie (King) LaBahn. She grew up on a farm in Plymouth County. On Nov. 19, 1947, she married Donald L. Bauerly in Merrill, Iowa. They raised three children, Ginger Lucille Bauerly, Donn Louis Bauerly, and David Michael Bauerly. After the wedding, the couple lived in Sioux City until moving to Sergeant Bluff in 1977. Donald passed away in May of 2017.
Betty Lou co-owned and operated Bauerly Upholstery in Sioux City from 1960 until 1999. She was an active member of the Church of the Nativity for many years, and belonged to the Women’s Guild of the church.
In her spare time, Betty Lou enjoyed traveling. She was a superb seamstress and an artist with fabrics.
She is survived by her children, Ginger, Donn (wife Judy) and David (wife Patti); seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Jane Schindel (husband Clarence); and many extended family members, friends, and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her parents, Louis and Bessie; two sisters, Gladys and Eunice; and three brothers, Vernon, Virgil, and Ron.

Maxine C. King, 95, of Cedar Falls, formerly Sioux City, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019, at Nation Cottage of the Western Home Communities.
Private family services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Locke Funeral Home in Waterloo, Iowa.
She was born Aug. 21, 1924, in Fargo, N.D., daughter of Homer and Emma (Golm) Sampson. Maxine graduated from Le Mars High School in 1924 and attended a business school. She married Ross King on Nov. 20, 1944, in Le Mars, Iowa. He died on April 13, 2009.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Maxine was a member of PEO, Church Circle, and several women's golf groups including the Dakota Dunes Golf Club.
Maxine was a homemaker and eventually went on to work as a library para educator with the Sioux City Community School District. She retired in 1989. After retirement, the couple enjoyed winters in Florida, Hawkeye games in the fall, and summers were spent golfing.
Maxine enjoyed raising her children, delighted in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, knitting, golfing, baking pies, cakes, and cookies, and Hawkeye sports.
Maxine is survived by two sons, David King and Robert King, both of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Susan (Mitch) Lantz of Waterloo, Iowa; three grandchildren, Emily (Matthew) Nolting, Steven (Jessica) Schmitt Jr., and Andrew (Megan) Schmitt; three step grandchildren, Jeff Lantz, Nathan Lantz, and Erica (Dustin) Lies; and six great-grandchildren, Jack Nolting, Avery Nolting, Walter Schmitt, Arlo Schmitt, Jason Lies, and Josie Lies.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Ross.

Dennis "Denny" Michael Ray, 74, of Mesa, formerly Sioux City, passed away on Oct. 4, 2019, after a short battle with (Mesothelioma) lung cancer.
Celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Mesa. Arrangements are under the direction of Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park & Funeral Care in Mesa.
Denny was born Nov. 22, 1944, to Wayne E. and Velma L. (Davis) Ray, in Sioux City. He graduated from East High School in 1964 and married his high school sweetheart, Judith A. Kempton on March 12, 1965.
He worked as a heavy equipment diesel mechanic for 43 years for various Caterpillar companies throughout the U.S. This adventure allowed him to work in Iowa as well as Nebraska, Colorado, Alaska, and finally Arizona. Denny and his family were so fortunate to meet their lifelong friendships during these years.
During his retirement years, he worked part-time at Lanstar, LLC, for his son, Joel and daughter-in-law, July. He enjoyed helping his cousin, Tom Ray at his farm during spring and fall in South Dakota. Denny was a member of the Dreamland Villa Sheriff's Posse for three years. He was also a member of Mesa Buckhorn 2656 Elks Club.
He loved camping and fishing. He also enjoyed watching his granddaughters, Rachel and Hannah during their swimming meets.
Denny is survived by his wife, Judith; daughter, Julie (Billy) Roberts; sons, Joel (July) Ray and Sgt. 1st Class Dwayne Ray (Bridget); granddaughters, Rachel, Hannah, Caitlin LeeAnn, Haley and Lauryn Pelzel and Megan Roberts; great-grandson, Ronin Roberts; his sister, Judy (Donald) Chesley; nephew, Gary (Susan) Chelsey ; and niece, Nancy Chesley (Jed); three sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his baby daughter, Janie Lynn; mother and father; and grandparents.
Big Bear Lake, Calif., formerly Sioux City
Bruce A. Meyer, 65, of Big Bear Lake, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 11, 2019, at the family cabin he and his mother rented to escape the summer heat.
No services are planned at this time.
Bruce was born Nov. 20, 1953, in Carroll, Iowa, to Harold and Arlene Meyer. He graduated from East High School in Sioux City.
He loved traveling, going out for fancy meals at fine restaurants, staying at elite hotels, and exploring California nature. He was a wonderful son and caretaker for his parents.
He is survived by his significant other of many years, Greg Chelebyan of Whittier, Calif.; his mother, Arlene Meyer of Joshua Tree, Calif.; and two brothers, Greg Meyer and his wife, Alice of Sioux City, their two children and three grandchildren; and Mitch Meyer and his wife, Andrea of Sergeant Bluff, their three children and four grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his father, Harold Meyer on Sept. 9, 2012.

Michael Dale Dugdale, 63, of Sioux City, passed away Oct. 8, 2019.
Per his wishes, Michael will be cremated and no services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.
Mike was born on Nov. 19, 1955, in Sioux City, to Dale and Marjorie (Kross) Dugdale. He attended North High School and then entered the United States Marines.
Mike worked at Wilson Trailer and Sioux City Foundry. He enjoyed watching TV, the outdoors, bike riding, grilling out, and spending time with his cat, Munchkin.
Survivors include his mother, Marge Dugdale of Sioux City; siblings, Steve (Jill) Dugdale and Connie Dugdale, both of Sioux City, and Patty (Keith) Swanson of Colo.; children, Shannon Dugdale and Brandi Nelson, both of North Dakota; and several grandchildren.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Dale.

David Jerome LaFleur, 88, of Sioux City, passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019, at a local care center.
Service will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Peter Nguyen officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery at Jefferson, S.D. David was born on July 9, 1931, in Jefferson, S.D., to Joseph and Marian (Bernard) LaFleur. He was employed in the meat-packing industry his entire career and was a true innovator of operational excellence while working for several companies including IBP, MBPXL, and John Morrell. David was named President of Missouri Beef Packers in 1972. He facilitated a buyout of Excel Packing in Wichita, Kan., before negotiating a merger with Cargill Industries, becoming a meat-packing giant with processing plants in Missouri, Texas, Idaho, and Kansas. He was instrumental in helping transition meat packing from cattle slaughtering and shipments of carcasses to further processors, to onsite processing of cattle primals and vacuum packaging to implement boneless boxed beef to retail and food service companies world-wide.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an excellent card player, playing cribbage and gin with family and friends.
David is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruth of Sioux City; six children, Colette (Jim) Hrabik of Omaha, Kevin (Judy) of Loveland, Colo., Pamela of Sioux City, Mary (Barry) Bird of Wichita, Kan., Joseph (Cindy) of Wichita, and David (Linda) of Avon Lake, Ohio; brother, Ray LaFleur of Elk Point, S.D.; sister, JoAnn (Doug) Faber of Phoenix, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by his parents.
