SIOUX CITY | Letter carriers on Saturday will gather donated food items from residents as they make their rounds during this year's Stamp out Hunger food drive.
The nationwide event, in its 25th year, is the largest food drive conducted on one designated day from coast to coast.
To participate, residents can place non-perishable food items in bags and place them next to their mailboxes for pickup on Saturday. U.S. Postal Service letter carriers will collect the bags and bring the items to the Food Bank of Siouxland.
Items in most demand, according to the food bank, are canned fruit and vegetables, soups, canned meats, hot and cold cereal, pasta and boxed or ready-made meals like macaroni and cheese.
Residents are requested to refrain from donating items that are past their expiration date, items that have been opened, items that are in glass jars or items that are homemade.
Last year's food drive took in a record 26,000 pounds.
