STORM LAKE, Iowa | Two Northwest Iowa-raised turkeys will be the lucky birds receiving a presidential pardon this Thanksgiving.
The Iowa Turkey Federation announced Tuesday that birds from a family farm in the Storm Lake area will be sent to President Barack Obama on Thanksgiving week to receive the customary gesture.
The National Turkey Federation, which makes the selection each year, has presented the president with turkeys each Thanksgiving since 1947. Presidents have made a recent tradition of pardoning the birds.
The Storm Lake area farm family and a pair of turkeys from their flock will visit four local schools for assemblies Thursday. Area schools will include the Holstein, Galva and Schaller elementary schools and Early Middle School.
The Iowa Turkey Federation will then hold a send-off from the family farm in Sac County on Friday morning.
This will be the sixth occasion for Iowa to supply the nationally pardoned turkeys.
