There are over 7.6 billion people in the world now. That is an increase of 1.6 billion in just 18 years. It took all of human history to reach 1.6 billion people by 1900 and we added as many in the last 18 years! Population in the U.S. alone has more than doubled since 1950.
In a politically unstable world, with deplorable and unsafe living conditions, people naturally flee to safety and to where they believe they can secure a better future for themselves and their children.
The rate of population growth has long been a concern, just as the deplorable and unsafe living conditions in many parts of the world have been. Much of the work done by many governments internationally alone, and in concert with other nations, has been to create better living conditions economically, in terms of health and safety, and in terms of political equality and justice.
The patterns of migration we see in the world today are about the failures of the international community to look beyond their own selfish self interest to an enlightened self interest that takes the needs of others into account.
The future is in our hands. All people everywhere seek to be happy, healthy and successful and the more we do to help people secure the blessings of liberty and justice in a safe and healthy environment the more likely they are to not need to migrate to other places to find what they cannot find at home.
