Twenty-three states, plus Washington, D.C., have a medical cannabis program. The current Iowa law is flawed and Iowans with serious health conditions are not able to obtain the medication.

Cannabis is one of the safest medications known and is effective for treating pain, glaucoma, cancer, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, epilepsy, and other serious health conditions. Cannabis contains approximately 100 cannabinoids, each serving different functions in the human body.

I believe those opposed to medical cannabis are either uninformed or afraid.

Many fear they may lose their good reputation by advocating for medical cannabis because of the stigma attached to the recreational use of marijuana, but this issue is not about the recreational use of marijuana or our reputations.

The governor and many lawmakers fear they will lose the war on illegal drugs if we provide for the use of medical cannabis, but this issue is not about the war on illegal drugs. It's about providing a safe and effective medication choice for those with serious health conditions.

The medical community fears loss of business, revenue, and control, but it's not about the medical community, either. They offer expensive treatments and drugs that are often not effective and come with long lists of adverse side effects. It's about a patient-driven process that offers a natural and safe medication choice. No one has ever died from an overdose of medical cannabis.

Please contact your state and federal lawmakers. Let them know that Iowans deserve top quality health care and medicine. Seriously ill patients don't have time. It's about getting help, not high. It's about a better life for those who need medical cannabis. - Jeri Goodell, Lake Park, Iowa
