Recently, the House of Representatives passed a health care bill that lists individuals with Down Syndrome as having a pre-existing condition. I am a father to a young man with Down Syndrome and I am writing this not to make a political statement, but to hopefully help with the understanding of Down Syndrome.
Individuals with Down Syndrome many times are born without any medical concerns and Down Syndrome should never be thought of as an illness. Down Syndrome occurs when an individual human being has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. This in and of itself is not an illness, but rather a genetic makeup. My son is no different than any one of us who wants to be loved and to love and to live a full life. When uneducated people make what they consider to be educated decisions on behalf of individuals with special needs we must stand up and state the truth.
Individuals with Down Syndrome are a blessing to our world and must never, never be thought of as an illness or pre-existing condition. - Shawn Donnelly, Sioux City
