Leslie Mark's brother, Jerry Mark, 32, was convicted of the crime. William Baldwin, 30, of Des Moines, was shot in a nearby bookstore. A prison escapee from Alabama was convicted in the youths' deaths, but charges for Baldwin's death were dropped. Her husband, Gene Gilbert, 28, was implicated in the slayings and committed suicide at his father's home in South Dakota. The Bentlers' son, Shawn Bentler, was convicted of five counts of murder. (The Des Moines Register, Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006) 2008: Iowa City The bodies of Sheryl Sueppel and her four children, Ethan, 10, Seth, 7, Mira, 5, and a 3-year-old were found in a home on Iowa City's east side on March 24, 2008. The father, Steven Sueppel, recently indicted on federal embezzlement charges, called 9-1-1 and then killed himself by driving the family minivan into a concrete abutment on Interstate 80.
