Paddy O'Prado was two months later than his owners probably would have liked, but the galloping gray owned by Iowans finally won his Derby.

Unfortunately, it was in Virginia. Not Kentucky.

The 3-year-old colt defeated six other rivals to take the $600,0000 Virginia Derby (G2) this afternoon at Colonial Downs racetrack in New Kent, Va.

Interactif finished second. Krypton ran third.

Paddy O'Prado has won twice, both times while racing on grass courses, since finishing third to Super Saver in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. His last victory came in the $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup on June 19.

The colt is owned by Donegal Racing, which includes ten Iowans. The group pooled its money together to buy the colt at a Kentucky auction for $105,000 in 2008.

Counting today's $352,800 first-place prize, Paddy O'Prado has earned more than $1.1 million.
