IOWA CITY | Former Sioux City Bishop Heelan High School athlete Tyler Cropley was 2-for-5 with five RBIs Friday while leading the University of Iowa baseball team to a 9-1 Big Ten Conference win over Penn State at Duane Banks Field.
A catcher, Cropley entered Saturday night’s game against Penn State leading Iowa (32-18, 12-9 Big Ten) in batting (.360), hits (67), doubles (20) and RBIs (50). Batting third in the order, Cropley and former Sioux City North athlete Robert Neustrom are tied for the lead at 43 runs.
Iowa broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the fifth inning. One-out singles from Mitchell Boe, Chris Whelan and Neustrom loaded the bases. Cropley followed with a two-run single to left field in a frame that also featured Matt Hoeg’s RBI single.
Cropley cleared the bases with the double that moves him into a tie for second place in the single-season school record. John Knapp holds the record with 24 in 1986.
Grant Judkins (1-0) threw five innings of relief to get the win on the mound, allowing two hits while striking out eight. Starter Cole McDonald fanned seven while allowing one hit in four frames.
