SIOUX CITY | The Sioux City Explorers signed pitcher Brian Ernst and acquired outfielder Jay Austin on Tuesday.

Ernst, a right-handed pitcher, played for the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League in 2015 and 2016. After playing collegiately at East Stroudsburg University and going undrafted, Ernst signed with the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks in 2013. Ernst has a career record of 32-23 and has 333 career strikeouts to 197 walks in 414.2 career innings.

The X’s acquired Austin from the Lincoln Saltdogs to complete the March 16 and Aug. 26 trades between the teams. Austin spent the previous four seasons playing independent baseball, most recently with the Sussex County Miners of the Can-Am League.

Playing at the independent level, Austin compiled a .326 batting average and stole 104 bases while being caught stealing 22 times. Austin was drafted by the Houston Astros in the second round of the 2008 MLB draft out of high school.
