WINNIPEG, Man. -- The Sioux City Explorers swept a three-game series with Winnipeg with a 6-2 victory here Sunday to improve to 63-22 on the season.
The Explorers struck first as Michael Lang and Nate Samson had hits to open the game in the first inning before Dean Green brought them both in with a single to center to put the X's up 2-0.
Winnipeg would draw even in the fourth inning when Josh Mazzola led off the frame with a single and scored on Grant Heyman's two-run home run.
Samson didn't allow the game to stay tied long as he drove a two-out single to center field to bring home Daniel Jackson and put the X's up for good at 3-2 in the top of the fifth.
Winnipeg threatened in the bottom of the seventh as it put two runners on with just one out. The X's went to the bullpen as Ryan Flores came in for starter Jason Garcia. Garcia allowed two runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Flores would get Tyler Baker to flyout for the second out before X's manager Steve Montgomery went to the pen again. This time he brought in Ryan Hortsman with runners on the corners before he got Josh Romanski to ground out to end the threat.
The X's defense came up big for its pitchers turning three double plays in the game.
Sioux City added an insurance run in the top of the eight as it loaded the bases with one out. Dexture McCall brought home Jose Sermo with an RBI ground out to increase the lead to 4-2.
The X's would load the bases again in the ninth and tacked on two more runs as Green walked to force in Luis Durango and Jay Baum singled to plate Lang.
Both Lang and Samson had three hits apiece as the X's pounded out 12 in the game. Garcia picked up his first victory for the Explorers and five relievers allowed just one hit over the final three-plus innings.
The Explorers begin a three-game series at Fargo-Moorhead beginning Monday.
