INDIANAPOLIS | Christian Costello allowed three hits and struck out nine in four innings Monday afternoon as Team Minnesota posted a 7-2 win over Team Iowa during Midwest Regional Little League tournament action at Stokely Field.
Team Iowa, comprised of the Sioux City Westside All-Stars, dropped to 1-2 in pool play. The squad, coached by Corey Dickson, Marty Werden and Yancy Bykerk, also committed four errors.
Team Iowa knotted the score 1-1 in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Kyle Windeshausen reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to third base on Austin Carter’s error. Windeshausen was then part of a double-steal, scoring when Carter beat a throw to second base.
Donovan Hall was responsible for both of Team Minnesota’s two runs in the bottom of the third, collecting an RBI single and then scoring on an error.
Team Iowa completed its scoring in the fourth inning as Tanner Bykerk doubled and crossed home plate on Jameson Bull’s single.
Team Minnesota, now 2-1 in pool play, scored a run in its half of the fourth inning, then took advantage of three errors while scoring three fifth-inning runs.
Carter and Luke Johnson each recorded one hit for Team Iowa. Bull suffered the pitching loss, allowing three earned runs, four hits and four walks while striking out three in four innings.
Team Iowa will face Team North/South Dakota at 1 o’clock (EST) this afternoon in its final pool play contest.
