SIOUX CITY | Morningside fought off a Dordt surge early in the second half and went on to defeat the Defenders 83-63 in a first-round game of the Great Plains Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament Wednesday at Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center.

The No. 6 Mustangs held a 50-40 lead at the half but saw Dordt go on a 15-5 run after the break to tie the score at 55-55. Morningside (24-6) had things its way after that, scoring 18 of the next 20 points to take a 73-57 lead with nine minutes to go.

Tyler Borchers scored a game-high 18 points and was one of five Mustangs to reach double digits in the game. Matt Hahn also scored 14 and Zach Imig 13 while both Andrew Semadeni and Trey Brown came off the bench to scored 11 apiece.

Kyle Lang had 12 points and Alec Henrickson 10 to lead the Defenders, who end their season with a 12-19 record.

The Mustangs will face the winner of the Hastings-Dakota Wesleyan first-round game in a semifinal round mutchup Saturday.
