DODGE CITY, Kan. | An early turnover and penalties that hurt the Sioux City Bandits early and often led to the team’s first loss of the season 51-39 to the Dodge City Law Sunday.

The Law jumped out to a 31-12 first half lead on the Bandits and was able to trade scores for much of the second to improve to 1-1 on the season. Sioux City hurt itself with 16 penalties for 152 yards in the contest.

Dodge City scored first in the game on a Dominique Carson 4-yard run, but the Bandits responded by marching down the field and looked poised to tie the game up when quarterback Charles Dowdell's pass was intercepted in the end zone.

The Law took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter as they held the ball for 9 minutes, 56 seconds in the opening quarter.

Sioux City would get on the board when Max Martin connected on a 35-yard field goal, but it took Dodge City just two plays to respond with an 8-yard Carson run to the end zone.

Sioux City would get its first touchdown of the game on a 9-yard TD pass from Dowdell to Frederick Bruno, but the Law blocked the extra-point attempt and returned it for two points of their own to go up 16-9.

The Bandits only other score in the first half came on a Martin 28-yard field goal.

Sioux City closed within 37-25 with 5:15 to go in the third on Johnny Bentley's 1-yard run, but the Law scored just three plays later on a 4-yard run from KingJack Washington. The drives were aided by a late-hit penalty on the Bandits.

Any further hope of a comeback was snuffed out in the fourth quarter when the ball slipped out of Dowdell's hand on a pass attempt and  recovered by Dodge City for the touchdown.

In a battle of two teams that like to run the ball it was Dodge City that racked up 140 yards on the ground while the Bandits had just 42.

Dowell was 16 of 28 for 240 yards, four touchdowns and the one interception. Bruno had six catches for 66 yards and three scores while Bentley ran for 27 yards.

The Bandits (1-1) return home Saturday to face Salina.
