WAVERLY, Iowa -- Buena Vista's first football game in the newly-renamed American Rivers Conference turned out to be a nightmare it would like to forget as Wartburg rolled to a 63-0 win at Walston-Hoover Stadium Saturday.
Coming off a difficult loss at Monmouth College last weekend, the Knights took out their frustrations on the Beavers, scoring 28 points in the first quarter to dominate from start to finish.
Running back Bennett Goettsch led Wartburg with four touchdowns — three rushing and one receiving — while JoJo McNair returned a punt 55 yards and an interception 38 yards to set up scores.
Adding to the special teams woes for Buena Vista (1-2, 0-1) were two punts snapped over the punter's head for major fourth-down losses. The Knights blocked two additional punts with Dane Steidler returning one 15 yards for a touchdown.
Wartburg's defense held the Beavers to one first down in the opening half — seven for the game — and 100 yards of total offense with negative-eight rushing yards on 39 carries. Wartburg head coach Rick Willis saw improved tackling from the group compared to last week's loss.
Buena Vista will look to right the ship next Saturday when it plays its ARC home opener against Coe.
