ORANGE CITY – Jacob Kalogonis ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns and the No. 5 Northwestern football team erupted for 35 points in the third quarter as the Red Raiders defeated No. 24 Midland 49-20 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference game here Saturday.
Tyson Kooima threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns and also added 73 rushing yards with a 12-yard touchdown run for Northwestern.
The Red Raiders (3-0, 2-0) led 14-13 at halftime, then outscored Midland 35-7 in the third quarter with two interceptions returned for scores. Noah Van’t Hof had a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown and Liam Stubbe had a 65-yard pick-six.
Payton Nelson had 169 yards passing and one score along with 65 yards rushing for Midland (2-1, 0-1).
Northwestern forced three turnovers on defense (one fumble and two interceptions) while only committing one.
The Red Raiders travel to face Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday.
