SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Doane jumped out to a 21-0 lead and then held on late as the Tigers defeated Dordt 24-21 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference game here Saturday.
Quarterback Jack Kalina threw for 235 yards and one touchdown and also scored on a 1-yard touchdown run for Doane (2-0) as the Tigers jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.
Noah Clayberg scored on a 53-yard run for Dordt (1-1) with 2:05 left in the half to trim the lead to 21-7.
After a Levi Schoonhoven touchdown run for Dordt and a Doane field goal, Levi Jungling scored on a 3-yard run for Dordt to trim the lead to 24-21 with 2:47 left in the game. Doane went three-and-out on the ensuing drive to give Dordt the ball with a chance to win, but a Brock Lamle's pass was intercepted by Jake Dodge in the final seconds to end the game.
Dordt outrushed Doane 254-133 and outgained them in total offense 438-368, but Dordt committed three turnovers (two interceptions and one fumble) while Doane had no turnovers.
