AMES, Iowa – Oklahoma’s leading rusher, and one of the Big 12’s best running backs, Rodney Anderson is out for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury he suffered in the second quarter of Oklahoma’s game against UCLA on Saturday.

Anderson burst onto the scene last year for Oklahoma starting the final seven games. He rushed for 1,166 yards on 189 attempts, and through two games this season, Anderson was averaging 10.2 yards per rush.

"He's played a lot of great football and has a lot more ahead of him,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said in a statement released by Oklahoma. “He's just a tremendous person and player and we'll miss him on the field. But we know he'll be with us every step of the way as a team captain, and that other players will step up in his place."

The Sooners have capable backups in Trey Sermon and T.J. Pledger. Sermon has rushed the ball 16 times for 87 yards and Pledger has ran it 14 times for 83.

America’$ pa$time

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray made as much money in the month of June as his head football coach, Lincoln Riley, will make this entire year – and there is nothing the NCAA can do about it.

Murray was selected ninth overall by the Oakland Athletics in the 2018 MLB Draft. His signing bonus was worth $5 million.

Before Lincoln Riley’s pay raise this offseason, he was scheduled to make $3.8-million. But Riley’s new deal is $25-million for five years – the same rate as his starting quarterback’s signing bonus.

Part of Murray’s deal with the A’s allowed him to play football for the Sooners this season, and Murray hasn’t disappointed.

The redshirt junior has passed for 515 yards and five touchdowns, completing 64 percent of his passes. He’s been just as effective on the ground, rushing for 92 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

Lincoln Riley, who was hired last season when Bob Stoops retired, was the youngest FBS coach when he was hired at just 33-years-old.

All he did was lead the Sooners to a 12-2 record, winning the Big 12 Conference Championship game and earning the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoffs.

Riley has handled the play calling duties for Oklahoma after being the Sooners’ offensive coordinator in 2015 and 2016. Last season, Oklahoma had the best scoring offense in the Big 12 at 45.1 point per game. The Sooners passed for over 5,000 yards and rushed for over 3,000.

Boomer Sooner

One of the main things anyone watching Oklahoma play a football game – or any sporting event – needs to know is Boomer Sooner, Oklahoma’s fight song. It’s repetitive, it’s overplayed, and frankly, morbid. It’s probably the only fight song that talks about what a person will be when they're dead.

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner

Boomer Sooner, OK U!

Oklahoma, Oklahoma

Oklahoma, Oklahoma

Oklahoma, Oklahoma

Oklahoma, OK U!

I'm a Sooner born and Sooner bred

and when I die, I'll be Sooner dead

Rah Oklahoma, Rah Oklahoma

Rah Oklahoma, OK U!

Now you can sing along when you hear it for the 574th time in a game.

Wrestling’s Heisman

The Hodge trophy, wrestling’s Heisman, is given annually to the nation’s best collegiate wrestler was named after Danny Hodge, an Oklahoma wrestler.

Hodge went 46-0 with 36 pins – including 26 pins in a row – as a collegiate grappler from 1955-57. Back in that day, athletes couldn’t compete at the varsity level as freshman, which is why he only wrestled three years.

Iowa State’s Cael Sanderson won the trophy three times when he went 159-0 as a collegiate wrestler. The two are part of an exclusive club of wrestlers who have gone undefeated – Sanderson is the only wrestler to go undefeated and win four national championships.
