VERMILLION, S.D. | There is no truth to the rumors circulating on social media that University of South Dakota football coach Bob Nielson was a candidate for the head coaching job at Kent State.
Nielson said as much in an interview with Jay Elsen of Midco Sports.
“There is absolutely no truth to any of these rumors regarding me and Kent State,” Nielson said. “I am not pursuing the job. I am the head coach at South Dakota and plan to be for the future.”
South Dakota athletic director David Herbster also told Elsen that the school has been working on a contract extension with Nielson since before the season ended and the process should be completed quickly.
Nielson led the Coyotes to their first-ever FCS playoff berth in his second season at USD. Some social media outlets reported that he had been offered the Kent State job after USD’s 54-42 loss to Sam Houston State in the second round Saturday.
On Sunday, Herbster said on Twitter that Nielson had not had conversations or had been offered the position at Kent State.
