CHEROKEE, Iowa – A pair of past champions set the pace in qualifying for the 84th annual Sioux Valley Amateur Match Play at Cherokee Golf Course.
Cherokee residents James DeVos, the 2014 champion, and Matt Pitts, who won in 2012, each carded 1-under-par 71. Charles Horton of Storm Lake, Iowa, has also posted a 71.
Saturday was the first day of qualifying after seven days of Earlybird qualifying from June 2-8.
Bill Mathers of Cushing, Iowa, the 2010 winner of Iowa’s oldest match play tournament, matched par with 72 as did Ryan Feauto of Carroll, Iowa. Feauto, a former Kuemper Catholic standout, just finished his freshman season at Dordt College.
Former Cherokee resident Dave Greenwood of Omaha shot 74, while Zach Mathers of Sioux Falls and Austin Sweeney of Sutherland, Iowa, qualified with 77. Jeff Covatto of Marcus, Iowa, had a 78 while Eric Sonksen of Aurelia, Iowa, and Ian Brandt of Okoboji, Iowa, each shot 79.
Qualifying continues through Friday with the last 18-hole rounds permitted to tee off no later than 1 p.m. and nine-holes at 3 p.m.
The qualifying medalist earns a cash prize of $250. J.D. Anderson of Johnston, Iowa, a three-time winner, was last year’s medalist.
Corey Matthey of Sergeant Bluff is the defending Sioux Valley champion. Matthey defeated Bill Mathers in last year’s title match.
