SOUTH SIOUX CITY | South Sioux City senior Zekariya Abdela qualified for the Nebraska Class B state cross country meet with a second-place time of 16:48.84 during a district meet held Thursday at Covington Links Course.

It’s the fourth consecutive state meet appearance for Abdela, who finished third in last year’s state meet at Kearney. Blair’s Samuel Lueders was clocked in 16:22 while winning the meet.

Juan Balderas finished 23rd (18:08.49) for the Cardinals. Sixth-place finishers in the meet with 72 points, South Sioux City also received scoring from Fathi Jalil (24th, 18:12.71) and Said Khalif (27th, 18:16.37).

The top three teams and top 15 individuals qualified for the state meet. Elkhorn outscored Blair 40-42 for the title while Mount Michael Benedictine advanced with a third-place 56 points.

South Sioux City’s Sadie Rocha qualified for the Class B state girls meet with a 10th-place 21:31.98 clocking.

Tuenedi Villicana (16th, 22:23.29) finished just one place shy of state qualification. Rounding off the scoring for the fifth-place Cardinals were Emane Ahmed (21st, 22:59.33) and Marybeth Rasmussen (27th, 23:34.04).

The first six runners across the finish line came from Elkhorn, paced by champion Abby Metschke (20:27.35). Elkhorn tallied 10 points while Blair (54) and Omaha Duschene (57) also reached the state meet.


SIBLEY, Iowa -- George-Little Rock/Central Lyon senior Joe Anderson won the Siouxland Conference title by about 11 seconds over Sheldon's Eric Heibult. Anderson ran 15:44.38 while Heibult was the runner-up in 15:53.43.

Sioux Center won the team title by 40 points over GLRCL, 47-87, as the Warriors were led by Sam Harrison's third-place effort of 16:16.71.

MOC-Floyd Valley's Jakob Van Der Werff took fourth (16:20.72) and Sibley-Ochyedan's Grant Brouwer was fifth (16:25.23).

The MOC-Floyd Valley won the girls title over Okoboji, 33-64.

Emma Haley and Emily Haverdink went 1-2 for the Dutch in 19:53.64 and 20:07.51, respectively. Okoboji freshmen Lexi Duffy and Leah Sorensen went third and fifth with times of 20:10.34 and 20:14.21.
