SIOUX CITY | Pending approval from the Sioux City School Board, Sioux City East has found its new head football coach.

East athletic director B.J. Koch will make his recommendation that Brian Webb, who has spent the last six seasons at Cedar Rapids Jefferson, become the sixth head coach at the school since 1972. Webb must still receive board approval and go through a pre-employment check.

"We are extremely excited to have Brian coach and be part of our staff," said Koch. "He has a lot of great experience and worked under some great coaches. He has had a lot of success and won a lot of games at programs that needed to rebuild. He checked all the boxes."

Webb compiled a 37-40 record with the J-Hawks over the past six seasons, reaching the Class 4A state playoffs in 2014 and 2015. Cedar Rapids Jefferson was 4-5 this past season.

Webb replaces Bob Goodvin who led the Black Raiders for nine seasons. He took East to the playoffs in the first seven of those campaigns before missing out in 2016 with a 3-5 mark and this past season at 4-5. Goodvin has a career record of 48-40.

Webb has experience rebuilding programs as he helped the J-Hawks snap the state's longest losing streak at the time in his first year. He went on to post the team's first winning season since 2000 and took it to its first playoff game since 1992.

He coached at Carroll Kuemper before going to Jefferson and had an 18-4 mark in two seasons. Webb has worked as an assistant at West Des Moines Valley, Dike-New Hartford and Spencer which appealed to Koch during his search.

"We are excited for his knowledge of the game and the multiple offenses and defenses he has used," Koch said. "He sets a system to his athletes he has at that time, and we were looking for a coach to adjust to our athletes.

"He has coached under Tom Wilson and Gary Swenson which is a huge bonus because those are two of the most successful coaches in the state."

Webb also has college experience spending two years at St. Cloud State University from 2003-2005.

Koch said his recommendation for Webb is for the coaching position and doesn't include a teaching job.
