In addition to all the high school football coverage that the Sioux City Journal provides, we will also rank the best senior prospects with an eye toward college football in our coverage area this season. So it isn’t a list of the best high school players. It’s a list of the best college football prospects in our coverage area.
The names and rankings on the list may change throughout the season. We currently have five players and may add more during the season.
No. 1: Max Duggan
School: Lewis Central (Iowa)
Commitment status: Verbally committed to TCU
Offers: TCU, Georgia, Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State among others
Last week: Duggan and No. 2 (3A) Lewis Central won 59-7 over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln (0-3) on Friday.
Duggan completed 13 of 17 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 42 yards and one score. For the season, Duggan has completed 35 of 47 passes for 668 yards and seven touchdowns. He also has 233 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries.
No. 2 (3A) Lewis Central hosts Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson (1-2) on Friday.
No. 2: Ezra Miller
Position: Offensive tackle
School: Ridge View (Iowa)
Commitment status: Verbally committed to Iowa
Offers: Iowa and Iowa State
Last week: Miller and Ridge View (0-3) lost 34-26 to East Sac County (1-2) on Friday.
Miller helped the Raptors rush for 192 yards on offense against the Raiders. Defensively,Miller finished with 5.5 tackles and one tackle for loss. For the season, Miller has 12 tackles and two tackles for loss.
Ridge View hosts Lawton-Bronson (0-3) this week.
No. 3: Ethan Piper
Position: Defensive tackle
School: Norfolk Catholic (Nebraska)
Commitment status: Verbally committed to Nebraska
Offers: Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio and South Dakota State
Last week: Piper and Norfolk Catholic (1-1) won 49-20 over St. Paul (1-2) on Friday.
Piper had six tackles and two sacks. Offensively, he had four pancake blocks. For the season, Piper has 15.5 tackles and three sacks along with four pancakes on offense.
No. 1 (C2) Norfolk Catholic plays next at No. 4 Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons-Decatur Northeast (3-0) this Friday.
No. 4: Blake Peterson
Position: Defensive end
School: Beresford (South Dakota)
Commitment status: Verbally committed to Iowa State
Offers: Iowa State, Minnesota, South Dakota, South Dakota State and Wyoming
Last week: Peterson and Beresford (3-1) won 35-32 over Groton Area on Friday.
Peterson finished with nine tackles, four tackles for loss and one sack. Offensively, he had three receptions for 32 yards. On the season, Peterson has 21.5 tackles, two sacks, seven tackles for loss and one pass breakup. He also has five receptions for 48 yards.
Beresford hosts Canton (4-0) on Friday.
No. 5: Cameron Baker
School: Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson (Iowa)
Commitment status: Undecided
Offers: Iowa, Indiana, North Dakota State and Northern Iowa
Last week: Baker and Thomas Jefferson (1-2) lost 17-12 to Denison-Schleswig on Friday.
Baker ran for 70 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries for Thomas Jefferson. Defensively, he had seven tackles. For the season, Baker has 571 yards rushing and nine touchdowns on 80 carries along with two receptions for 25 yards. Defensively, he has 14 tackles and two tackles for loss.
