DELL RAPIDS, S.D. | Dakota Valley’s boys golf team has a slim 343-346 lead over Tea Area in the battle for first place at the South Dakota Class A state tournament, which began Monday at Rocky Run Golf Course.
Junior Paul Bruns, part of the Dakota Valley team that took second place in last year’s Class A state tournament at the Dakota Dunes Country Club, is one of five players tied for third place at 73 heading into Tuesday’s action.
Among the linksters tied with Bruns is Vermillion’s Ryne Whisler. Others include Aberdeen Roncalli’s Lucas Schaefbauer, Westin Trenhaile (Sioux Valley) and Alex Vande Greind (Sioux Falls Christian).
Bruns, Whisler and the rest are chasing first-round leader Brock Murphy (75) of Tea Area and Sisseton’s Nate Nielsen (76).

Sophomore Keaton Hensley, another veteran from Dakota Valley’s runner-up state tournament squad, shot an 80. The Panthers are also represented at Rocky Run by Isaac Bruns (86), Evan Monell (98) and Jordan Smith (105).
Aberdeen Roncalli and Madison are tied for third at 348. Fifth-place Sisseton (353) is followed by West Central (365), Lennox (366), Parkston (367), Custer (370), Redfield (389), Chamberlain (394), Canton (405), Hot Springs (429) and St. Thomas More (434).
Vermillion has two others at the tournament competing as individuals, Hunter Lavin (86) and Willis Robertson (86).
Elk Point-Jefferson’s Ethan Kelly was listed in tournament results as disqualified.
