Heelan wins meet, Opsahl medals


COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Sioux City Bishop Heelan won a Missouri River Conference boys golf meet at Dodge Riverside here Thursday.

The Crusaders totaled 307 while second-place Sioux City East totaled 319. Sioux City North, which produced meet medalist Nick Opsahl, was third at 343. Rounding out the team standings were Sergeant Bluff-Luton (354), Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson (372), Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln (381) and Sioux City West (411).

North’s Opsahl (38-30) and Jackson Thompson of Heelan (35-33) each shot 68 on the course that played as a par-69 because of construction. Opsahl deeated Thompson with a birdie on the first hole of a sudden death playoff.

Team champion Heelan also counted Jackson Sitzmann at 35-37—72, Ethan Mathison 45-38—83 and Zach Uhl 48-36—84.

East’s counters were Drake Anderson with 40-36—76, Aden Gomez 45-36—81, Gavin Cote 40-41—81 and Cam Riemer 43-38—81.

Along with Opsahl, North also had A.J. Johnson with 46-43—89, Soren Peterson 46-43—89 and Brody Spearman 51-46—97.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton was paced by Schuyler Warren with 44-36—80, while Jacob Massey shot 51-38—89, Peyton Hardie 48-42—90 and Easton Plantenberg 52-43—95.

West’s Jesse Elgert carded 44-41—85, Matt Elgert 53-53—106, Ryan Smith 60-46—106 and Jaren Hollingshead 58-56—114.
