FORT DODGE, Iowa -- The Akron-Westfield softball team finished its 2018 season with a fourth-place finish at the Iowa Girls High School State Softball Championships at Harlan Rogers Sports Complex here Thursday.
The second-seeded Westerners fell to fourth-seeded Lisbon 9-7 in the Class 1A third-place game.
Akron-Westfield outhit Lisbon 11-7, but the Lions got a six-run fourth inning and added three more in the sixth.
Jaden Harris, Danika Smith, Kiana Appley and Tori Nemesio all had two hits apiece for the Westerners, who finish the season at 27-6. A-W did strand seven runners on base in the game and committed three errors.
Lisbon pitcher Skylar Sadler allowed all 11 hits, struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Harris pitched 5.1 innings for the Westerners. She allowed all eight runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
Lisbon was led by Sadler and Grace Clark who had two hits apiece while Sadler and Madelyn Morningstar both drove in a pair.
Akron-Westfield, which finished fifth at last year's state tournament, graduates five seniors in Smith, Courtney Waterbury, Brynn VanEldik, Appley and Kammi Bishop.
