ALTA, Iowa – The Alta-Aurelia Warriors punched their ticket to the Iowa Class 2A Softball Tournament with a 5-2 victory over Western Christian in a regional final at Alta on Monday evening.

Junior Abby Kraemer improved her season strikeout total to 341 in fanning 19 Wolfpack hitters while earning victory No. 22 on the season, same as the A-A total. Kraemer, now 22-3 on the season, twirled a three-hitter and walked five in securing the state-tournament berth for the fifth-ranked Class 2A club.

Jessica Flaherty, also a junior, had two hits, including a homer, and two runs batted in to pace the Warriors’ offensive attack. Brittany Turnquist, Annika Patton and Mallorie Jacobson also earned hits for the Twin Lakes Conference representative.

Senior Brooklyn Van Oort doubled and drove in a run for the visitors in her final contest. Chandler Schemper and Madison Byl added singles for Western, a Lakes Conference squad that ended its campaign with a 16-10 ledger.

Senior Alyssa Buren suffered the loss in the pitcher’s circle, surrendering five hits and four earned runs to the Warriors, who open the state tournament at 5:30 p.m. Monday against Iowa City Regina, whose overall mark is 23-15.

NEWELL-FONDA 10, NORTH UNION 0: Unranked Newell-Fonda blanked Class 1A No. 5 North Union 10-0 to earn a spot in the state softball tournament Monday by downing the Warriors in in Swea City.

Ella Larson won for the 13th time this season throwing a shutout over seven innings allowing just three hits. She walked one batter, struck out six and has gone 18 innings without giving up an earned run.

Newell-Fonda (25-13) was led at the plate by Maggie Walker who had three hits, drove in four and scored two runs. Ellie Lago hit a two-rUn home run for the Mustangs, who had a 5-0 lead before adding five more runs in the seventh inning.

Newell-Fonda had 10 hits in the game.

The Mustangs will play the first game of the state tournament at the eighth seed as they take on top-seeded Collins-Maxwell (27-1).
