FORT DODGE, Iowa | Seventh-seeded Earlham broke a scoreless deadlock to tally seven runs in the third inning and went on to post a 15-3 win in five innings over third-seeded Alta-Aurelia during a consolation round game at Tuesday’s Class 2A state softball tournament.
Alta-Aurelia pulled within 7-3 in the bottom of the third inning, a frame that included RBI singles from Annika Patton and Abby Kraemer. However, Earlham broke the game open with eight runs in the top of the fourth.
Alexis Bean doubled, singled and drove in four runs for Earlham (28-12), which outhit the Warriors 12-7 and slammed seven extra-base hits. Lizzie Arnburg doubled twice while Katlynn Voss homered.
Kraemer and Lily Peterson each went 2-for-2 for Alta-Aurelia (22-5), which dropped each of its two games in its state softball tournament debut.
Kraemer, the losing pitcher, walked four and struck out seven. She finished the season ranked second in the state with 365 strikeouts.
Coach Dave Turnquist loses only two seniors from the batting order, Peterson and Alicia Turnquist.
