The Warriors finished eighth in last year’s 4A field and are making their eighth overall trip and seventh under Tom Prince, a newly minted Iowa Girls Coaches Association Hall of Famer. SB-L, No. 15 in the final regular season ratings, surprised No. 9 Denison-Schleswig 4-3 in a regional final at Denison, slugging three solo home runs and scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior Madelyn Mogensen leads the Warriors with a .447 batting average while sophomore Emma Christensen is hitting .398 with 24 stolen bases in as many attempts. Senior Bradee Bouman has a 15-9 pitching record with a 2.35 ERA. Independence is coached by Sioux City West graduate Heather (White) Hupke, who previously coached at West and Buena Vista University. Her daughter, junior Mackenzie Hupke, is hitting .420 with five triples, two home runs and 39 RBIs and a 23-3 pitching record. Independence is also in its eighth state tournament, but first since 2005.
