SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa -- Both teams scored eight runs in an inning, but it was Class 3A seventh-ranked Spirit Lake that pulled out a 14-9 victory over Storm Lake here Wednesday.

The Tornadoes had a 9-6 lead going into the bottom of the sixth before the Indians erupted for eight runs.

Karli Olsen, Payton Ahrenstorff and Izzy Backhaus all had three hits for Sprint Lake while Karli Olsen added two RBIs.

Storm Lake's Briana Soto had two hits and drove in four on a grand slam.

Spirit Lake is now 19-3 and Storm Lake is 5-7.

SOUTH O’BRIEN 12, MMCRU 5: South O’Brien ran its record to 13-0 with a 12-5 softball victory over MMCRU Wednesday at Paullina.

The Wolverines collected 17 hits, including three each by Erin Wagner and Sydney Struve. Wagner had a double, two singles, three RBIs and two runs scored while Struve had a double, two singles and two RBIs. Winning pitcher Bailey Tjossem allowed six hits, struck out six and walked three.

NEWELL-FONDA 10 STORM LAKE ST. MARY'S 0: An eight-run first inning was more than enough for the Class 1A No. 11 Mustangs in a five-inning victory on Wednesday.

Olivia Larsen threw a one-hitter, walked one and struck out two. Ella Larsen had three hits, scored twice and drove in two. Emma Stewart also had two hits for Newell-Fonda.

CHEROKEE 8, SPENCER 5: Cherokee handed Spencer an 8-5 Lakes Conference setback Wednesday in Cherokee.

The Braves, ranked No. 14 in Class 2A, took advantage of six walks, nine hits and five Spencer errors. Teagan Slaughter had two hits and two RBIs, Payton Slaughter two singles and Alexus Jones a single, double and two RBIs. Winning pitcher Lindsay Williams struck out seven.

Spencer’s Josie Heisinger hit a three-run homer while Ashlynn Nissen added a triple and single.

AKRON-WESTFIELD 13, UNITY CHRISTIAN 0: Fourth-ranked (Class 1A) Akron-Westfield blanked Orange City Unity Christian 13-0 in three innings Wednesday at Orange City.

Bryn Van Eldick had two hits and scored two runs while winning pitcher Jaden Harris threw a no-hitter and collected two hits at the plate. Lily Kenny knocked in three runs for the Westerners, 13-2 overalla nd 5-1 in the War Eagle Conference. Unity Christian dipped to 1-13 and 1-5.

WESTWOOD 12, OA-BCIG 4: Westwood downed OA-BCIG 12-4 in Western Valley Conference action Wednesday in Sloan.

Katelyn Martian picked up the pitching win, spacing nine hits while striking out six. Brooklyn Topf hit two triples while Makenna Harding was 3-for-3 and Sam Burkhart 2-for-4 with a triple.

OA-BCIG’s Jordan Hedberg was 3-for-4 with two doubles and Ryder Cranston collected three hits. Westwood is 12-6 overall and 6-3 in the conference while OA-BCIG is 9-8 and 4-5.

EAST 10, WEST 2: East broke the game open with six runs in the second inning and went on to down West 10-2 Wednesday at East High.

Katlynn Tucker rapped a three-run double in the second and the other three runs all scored on walks. Maddie Hase and Josie Blake had two singles each while winning pitcher Chasity Johnson gave up six hits and struck out five.

East plays at Le Mars Thursday.

NEWELL-FONDA 12, RIDGE VIEW 7: Olivia Larsen and Ella Larsen combined six this and scored six runs to help the Class 1A No. 11 Mustangs win on Tuesday.

Ella Larsen picked up the win on the mound allowing 11 hits, walking one and striking out eight.
