RAPID CITY -- Vermillion's Maddie Lavin picked up her second state title in as many days as the senior won the 1,600 meters at the South Dakota State Track and Field Meet here Saturday.
Lavin held off Custer's Tori Glazier by just over a tenth of a second to win in 5:11.22. Lavin, who was fourth in the event last year, won the 1,600 as a sophomore.
Lavin also ran the anchor leg of the sprint medley relay that finished as the runner-up to Hill City. Ellie Schroeder, Kenna Druecker, Rachel Brady and Lavin ran 4:16.12 while Hill City won in 4:16.08.
Lavin helped lead Vermillion to a third-place finish in the team standings with 51 points. Belle Fourche was second with 52 and St. Thomas More won with 83.
The Tanagers' 4x100 relay team of Schroeder, Emily Stockwell, Druecker and Mack LaBrune finished fifth in 51.84 while Schroeder, Brady, Druecker and LaBrune were fifth in the 4x200 in 1:48.70.
LaBrune would finish seventh in the 200 in 26.98.
Vermillion's boys' sprint medley finished second in 3:36.21 as Ray Lewis, Matt Bierle, Tommy Nikkel and A.J. Plitzuweit were beat to the line by Mt. Vernon/Plankinton's 3:35.68. Bierle, Plitzuweit, Bryce Stockwell and Nikkel took fifth in the 4x400 relay in 3:37.19.
Dakota Valley's Tadd Green, Cole Schulz, Travis Ohl and Eli Gaiani took fourth in the 4x200 in 1:31.73.
Dakota Valley senior Alyssa Johnson took sixth in the long jump going 16-10.
Nikkel took third in the 400 in 51.31, and Bierle was seventh in the 300 hurdles 42.57. Ohl took seventh in the 100 in 11.42 seventh in the 200 in 22.84.
