ORANGE CITY, Iowa | Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s volleyball team had an amazing Saturday of blocking.

Coach Renee Winkel’s Class 4A eighth-ranked Warriors collected 38 blocks while posting a 5-0 record while winning the Unity Christian Tournament. Madison Harms provided three solo blocks and 12 block assists while Kylee Christensen added three solos and six assists.

Lexi Sneller contributed seven block assists for Sergeant Bluff-Luton, which defeated Red Oak (21-12, 18-21, 15-11), Southwest Minnesota Christian (21-17, 21-9) and Unity Christian (21-11, 23-21) in Pool A play.

Unity Christian and Red Oak are ranked sixth and ninth, respectively, in Class 2A. The Warriors defeated No. 2 (Class A) Sioux Falls Christian 21-15, 21-19 in the semifinals, then hiked their season record to 24-1 following a 21-8, 21-19 win in the finals over Unity Christian.

Christensen, a Northwest Missouri State verbal commit, led the tournament champions with 32 kills. Harms added 23 kills while Kenzie Foley and Elle Sneller added 17 and 13, respectively.

Lexi Sneller dished 71 assists while Maya Schmidt added 12. Double-digit dig totals came from Abby Minten (30), Foley (28) and Schmidt (12) for a team that has gone 7-1 against state-ranked opponents in the last two tournament Saturdays and will play No. 2 (2A) Western Christian at Hull this Thursday.

Tournament host Unity Christian was one of three Pool A teams to post 1-2 records in its four-team section. The Knights bounced back from a 21-17, 8-21, 16-14 loss to Southwest Christian to defeat Red Oak 22-20, 21-14, then concluded pool play with the loss to Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

Coach Patty Timmerman’s Knights defeated No. 2 (3A) Sioux Center 19-21, 21-17, 15-13 before falling to Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the finals.

Jori Bronner collected 45 kills, 30 digs and six block assists for Unity Christian (8-7). Corrine Timmermans provided 36 kills, 34 digs, one solo block and four block assists, while setters Erin Wieringa and Brooke Zevenbergen had 64 and 20 assists, respectively.

Zevenbergen also had 24 digs and seven ace serves. Janie Schoonhoven had 17 digs while Haley Hofmeyer had five blocks.

Kuemper Catholic, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, had a 2-2 record on the day. Sioux Falls Christian defeated Sioux Center 18-21, 21-17, 17-15 for third place in a matchup of teams that were each 3-2.
