WAUKEE, Iowa - Two teams who finished as runners-up in the two largest volleyball classes in Iowa a year ago squared off for the title of the Waukee Tournament with No. 3 Class 5A West Des Moines Valley sweeping No. 2 Class 4A Sergeant Bluff-Luton 25-13, 25-16 Saturday.

It was the second straight year the two teams met for the Waukee final with Valley also winning 2-1 in three sets last fall. The Warriors fell in five sets to Dubuque Wahlert for the 4A state title a year ago while Valley was swept by Cedar Falls in the 5A title.

SB-L advanced out of pool play with a 4-0 mark Saturday, opening the day with a 21-19, 21-16 win over No. 6 (5A) Urbandale. SB-L also got a 21-11, 21-10 over West Marshall and a 21-8, 21-6 shellacking of Des Moines Lincoln before entering elimination-round action with a 20-22, 21-8, 15-10 win over 5A No. 9 Waukee.

In the semifinals, SB-L dropped the first set to 5A No. 7 Ankeny before rallying for a 18-25, 25-20, 19-17 win to move to the final.

Kenzie Foley led the Warriors (16-2) with 64 kills in the tournament's six matches while adding 28 digs and five ace serves. Elle Sneller (40 kills) and Madison Harms (36 kills) also had big days for SB-L. Setter Maya Schmidt had 121 assists and also added five aces and libero Mia Gamet also had 44 digs. Harms led the Warriors with eight ace serves and seven blocks.

SB-L will be facing another Class 5A-ranked team on Tuesday when it travels to take on No. 12 Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

NORTH GOES 2-2: The Stars picked up wins over East (21-15, 21-16) and Hinton (21-11, 21-18) at the Cherokee Tournament on Saturday. North would fall to Class 3A No. 7 MOC-Floyd Valley (21-18, 21-13) and Cherokee (14-21, 21-17, 15-6) to finish the day 2-2.

Kylee Eickholt led the Stars with 34 kills and Courtney Johnson added 14. Avery Beller had 29 digs, Hailey Hoogers dished out 39 assists and Riley Zediker and Maeve Coughlin had three aces each.

North is now 10-5 on the season and will be at Heelan Tuesday.

WEST GOES 0-4: The Wolverines lost four matches at the Fort Dodge Tournament on Saturday.

West lost 21-6, 21-6 to Ridge View, 21-13, 21-6 to Des Moines Christian, Fort Dodge won 21-10, 21-15 and Lewis Central downed West 21-9, 21-10.

Nia Moore had eight kills, Kaylynne Patterson had seven assists and Bricelyn Comstock had 14 digs.

West is now 0-17.

H-LP GOES 4-0 IN GRAETTINGER: Harris-Lake Park picked up wins over West Bend-Mallard (21-14, 17-21, 15-7), Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire (21-14, 13-21, 15-6 and (18-21,21-10, 15-12) and West Hancock (21-10, 21-8) at the GTRA Tournament on Saturday.

Taylor Meyer had 33 kills and Bri Ihnen added nine to pace the Wolves. Kenzie Heikens had 18 aces for H-LP on the day and Mady Brevik dished out 31 assists.

H-LP is 9-5 on the season.
