SIOUX CITY - Class 2A state volleyball tournament hopefuls Western Christian and Unity Christian both went 5-0 on the day to win their respective pools at the Bishop Heelan Classic held at East High School Saturday.

The Wolfpack, ranked No. 3 in 2A, handed South Dakota AA No. 1-ranked Sioux Falls O'Gorman one of two losses it suffered on the day 18-21, 21-19, 15-11 to effectively clinch its pool. The Wolfpack recorded straight set wins over Heelan, Le Mars, Sioux Center and North in its other matches and improved to 36-5.

Macay Van’t Hul had 37 kills and 10 blocks for Western Christian while Ally Postma and Chandler Schemper each added 22 kills apiece. Setters Olivia Granstra and Tori Wynja had 64 and 46 assists, respectively, while Madison Hofman had 34 digs and nine ace serves for the Wolfpack.

No. 5 Unity Christian (27-6) was also carried to three sets just once on the day, outlasting South Dakota 11AA No. 3 Sioux Falls Washington 19-21, 21-14, 15-13. The Knights also overwhelmed No. 1 Class 4A Sergeant Bluff-Luton 21-10, 21-14 on their way to a 5-0 day.

Corrina Timmermans had 52 kills while Jori Bronner added 34 kills and six blocks. Erin Wieringa had 97 assists while Brooke Zevenbergen (29), Timmermans (27) and Bronner (26) paced the Knights in digs.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton won its other four matches on the day and was the only team in the event to finish 4-1. The Warriors, were carried to three sets by East and Washington and both times came back from 21-12 losses in the opening set. SB-L also was carried beyond the 21-point limit in both games with Ridge View and came back from a 20-14 deficit in the second set to stun the Raptors and win the match 22-20, 23-21.

Senior Madison Harms topped 1,000 kills for her career during the afternoon for SB-L (33-7).

East went 2-3 on the day picking up wins over Lawton-Bronson and Ridge View. Lineya Wells had 35 kills to pace the Black Raiders while Josie Blake had 31 digs. Emma Harmelink also had 21 kills while Kirsten Sykes and Riley Donahue had 18 kills apiece. Chloe Kramer had 57 assists for East.

No. 11 Bishop Heelan (Class 4A) joined O'Gorman and Sioux Center with 3-2 days in pool play, logging wins over North, Sioux Center and Le Mars.

North was winless on the day in five matches but won sets in losses to Sioux Center, Heelan and Le Mars. Kylee Eickholt had 23 kills and Bella Arredondo 22 kills while Avery Beller had 41 digs and Hailey Hoogers 47 assists for North (14-22).

EP-J second at Dak XII

NORTH SIOUX CITY -- Top-ranked Sioux Falls Christian won the Dakota XII Conference Tournament championship on Saturday while Elk Point-Jefferson was the runner-up and Dakota Valley was fourth.

The Huskies fell to Sioux Falls Christian 25-15, 25-12 as Carlie Corder led the way for the Huskies with four kills and Karly Marx had six assists.

EP-J downed Lennox 25-20, 25-6 as Kenna Curry had five kills and Corder added six. Marx had 17 assists.

Dakota Valley fell to Dell Rapids 25-23, 18-25, 25-20 as Ally Beresford and Rachel Wente had eight kills each for the Panthers and Beresford added 41 assists and 12 digs.

Dakota Valley also fell to Sioux Falls Christian 25-8, 25-13 as Sofia Atchison had four kills for the Panthers. Dakota Valley did down Madison 25-20, 25-22 as Wente and Tori Schultz had five kills each.
