SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Western Christian was waiting for this opportunity.
The top-ranked Wolfpack now have their vengence against No. 2 Sheldon, beating them here Tuesday in a Class 2A regional final – 25-18, 25-16, 25-22.
Western Christian will face Ridge View 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 in the first round of the state tournament in Cedar Rapids.
After losing to Sheldon in last year's Class 2A state tournament, Western Christian coach Tammi Veerbeek said her players never forgot.
And this time it was No. 1 vs. No. 2.
Brooke Wolterstorff recorded 12 kills and five ace serves for the Wolfpack while teammate Abby Horstman had 14 kills and four blocks. Kayla Gesink had 34 assists, 11 digs and five kills.
“We came into this match fired up from a year ago when they knocked us out in semis at state,” Veerbeek said. “The players were motivated and worked hard in practice.
It was definitely unfortunate these two teams had to meet in regional match. I don't know what the state was thinking with that.”
Veerbeek attributes her team's success Tuesday to being a year older.
“We had a year more experience and maturity and confidence,” Veerbeek said. “Maybe last year we were not as confident, but his is redemption for last year.”
The win secured Western Christian's 10th straight trip to state and 28th overall. The team has won 12 state championships.
“We've had a lot of success, but this never gets old. It's pretty amazing. We were in a tough region and we hope to represent it well at state.”
