LINCOLN | A promising start for Sioux City fizzled behind a three-goal rally by Lincoln to close the first period. and the Stars went on to score seven unanswered goals to rout the Musketeers 7-1 at the Ice Box Tuesday evening.
It took just 30 seconds for the Musketeers to get the lead, scoring when Cole Koepke converted a pass from The goal was the 15th for Koepke, who has lIt the light in four straight games against the Stars, including a game-winner with 1.9 seconds left in the game on Dec. 30.
Things turned sour for Sioux City after that. The Stars had a 17-4 edge in shots on goal in the first 20 minutes and turned their early deficit into a 3-1 lead after one period.
Lincoln used a 4-on-3 power play to get on even terms midway through the opening period with Casey Dornbach getting his 14th of the season. The Stars took the lead at 16:10 on another power play, this time scoring on Austen Long's tip in with 3:50 left in the period. Zach Dubinsky added a third Lincoln goal less than a minute later to increase the Star lead to two goals.
After giving up three goals in the opening 20 minutes, Sioux City changed its goalie to start the second period with Ben Kraws coming on to replace Matt Jurusik.
Kraws kept the Stars from building on their lead in the middle period, but surrendered a short-handed score by Dominick Mersch who reached the back of the net on a back hander at 5:37 of the third. Carter Long tacked on an insurance goal for Lincoln with 6:05 left to put the game all but out of reach for Sioux City, which dropped to 15-14-6. Two late goals by Lincoln, including the third power-play marker of the night, just added to the Musketeers' misery.
Lincoln entered the game having lost its last three games by a 12-2 combined score, improved to 15-18-1.
Sioux City returns to the Tyson Events Center with a pair of games Friday and Saturday against Green Bay.
