Martin Pospisil (2 goals, 4 assists) is off to the best start of his two-year United States Hockey League career with the Musketeers ... One of five players tied for fifth in the league’s scoring race with six points, Pospisil hiked his scoring streak to three games when he assisted, along with Bobby Brink (1, 2) on a third-period empty-net goal from Marcus Kallionkieli (3, 1) in the 3-1 win at Green Bay on Oct. 5 ... Pospisil is not only shooting 22.2 percent (2 of 9), he has limited himself to just four penalty minutes in the first three games ... Brink is the only other Musketeer to score in all three games ... Kallionkieli is shooting a team-best 27.3 percent (3 of 11) while Parker Ford (2 goals) is at 25 percent (2 of 8) ... Matt Miller’s first goal of the season to give Sioux City a 1-0 lead against Green Bay, was his sixth in 74 games as a Musketeer dating back to the 2016-17 season when he contributed three assists for the Anderson Cup champions coached by Jay Varady ... Pospisil and Ford each scored a goal in a 6-4 loss to Cedar Rapids on April 6 last season at the Tyson Events Center, a game where defensemen Luke Johnson (1 assist) and Jack Babbage (1 assist) recorded two and one assist, respectively ... Kevin Lombardi (1 goal) and Josh Bohlin (0 of 6 shots) combined for eight goals at Cedar Rapids last season ... Bohlin, in fact, dealt two assists in the 6-4 win at Sioux City ... Goaltender Ben Kraws (2-1) improved his goals-against-average to 3.43 after stopping 37 of 38 shots against Green Bay ... Sioux City ranks fourth in the USHL with a 91.7 percent (12 of 13) penalty kill ... While the PK hasn’t been scored upon in its last eight chances, the power play has only converted one of 12 chances for 8.3 percent ... Only Omaha is worse at 6.7 percent (1 of 15).
CEDAR RAPIDS NOTES
Blake Pietila (3-0-1) is tied for fifth among the league’s goaltenders with a 1.49 goals-against average ... Second in the USHL in wins, Pietila is also tied for third with 242 minutes played ... Scoring leader Nathan Smith (4 assists), who had 17 goals and 30 assists for last year’s 26-24-10 club, has assisted in each of the Rough Riders’ four games, two of those scoring passes coming on goals from rookie Grant Silianoff (2 goals, 1 assist) ... Jason Polin (2, 1), who has recorded 22 goals and 15 assists in his three Cedar Rapids seasons, scored two goals, including the game-winner in last Friday’s 3-2 overtime win at Dubuque ... Liam Walsh (1, 1), who has 16 goals and 16 assists in 123 games at Cedar Rapids, had a goal and assist in last year’s 6-4 win over Sioux City on April 6, then Smith had a goal and an assist a night later in a 4-0 home win over the Musketeers the following night, a win that took the Musketeers out of playoff consideration.
