The team of Terry Matheny and Kerry Hombs, both of Sioux City, took top honors at the Catfish Drifters and Big Sioux Catfish Anglers' catfish tournament last Saturday on the Missouri and Big Sioux Rivers.
Matheny and Hombs collected the $1,000 first prize after weighing in 38.46 pounds of catfish.
Taking second place was the Sioux City team of Jeff Wagner, Sr., and Jeff Wagner, Jr., with a total of 35.34 pounds. They won $392.
Third place honors went to Darrell Carter, Elk Point, S.D., with a weight of 27.34 pounds. He won $314.
In fourth was Larry Carter and Mike Carter, both of Sioux City with a catch of 21.86 pounds. They won $157.
Big fish award went to Jeff Wagner, Jr., with a 10.40 flathead catfish. He won $270.
Most of the fish caught in this tournament were flatheads, it was reported.
The event was sponsored by Rusty Bait Co. and was hosted by the Iowa Catfish Drifters and Big Sioux Catfish Anglers clubs.
A total of 29 boats blasted off from the Sioux City Municipal Boat Ramp at 7 a.m. Weigh-in was at 4 p.m.
The winning team fished the Big Sioux River.
Bobby Walrod, president, of the Big Sioux club and Jerry Smith, president of the Drifters, said they will host the tournament again next year.
