VERMILLION, S.D. | Senior Rachel Cue pitched a four-hitter and South Dakota silenced Fort Wayne 7-0 in a Summit League softball game played here Friday.

The Coyotes (19-26, 9-7 Summit) clinched their fifth consecutive Summit League Tournament appearance and Cue continued to dazzle this season after a disappointing 2016 season where she ended with a 1-18 mark. Now 9-8 this season, Cue has tossed four shutouts and lowered her earn run average by over two runs per game from last season. The win was the 40th of her career.

USD took command early, scoring five times in the first inning. Catcher Jessica Rogers had a two-run double to get the Coyotes on the scoreboard. Shelby Keil plated two more runs on a triple down the right field line and she scored to make it 5-0 on Jamie Holscher's sacrifice bunt.

Morgan Vasa also had two hits and drove in a run for South Dakota, which hosts Fort Wayne again Saturday in a twin bill set for an 11 a.m. start.

LATE THURSDAY

NORTHWESTERN 9-15, MOUNT MARTY 0-12: Kayla Tindall pitched a four-hitter and struck out four Thursday night as Northwestern won the first game of a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Northwestern Softball Complex.

Two Red Raiders each hit their fifth home runs of the season. Jessica Rayela’s two-run shot highlighted a three-run first inning while teammate Cheyenne Wilcke homered to lead off the third. Jessica Sandbulte hit a two-run double in the fourth inning.

Northwestern (23-20, 10-8 GPAC) scored 10 runs in the first inning of the second game, with three key run-producing hits, including Mons Figueroa’s three-run home run. Katie Elliott hit a three-run double and Jensen Boger hit a two-run single.

Boger and Figueroa were each 3-for-4 with four and three RBIs, respectively. Elliott was 2-for-2 with three RBIs while Brianna Petrauskas hit a two-run double that highlighted the Red Raiders’ five-run third inning.
