WAYNE, Neb. | Wayne State had to come from behind in both games to sweep Upper Iowa, 7-5 and 7-6 in a Northern Sun Conference baseball doubleheader here Thursday.
Aaron Krier’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth gave the Wildcats the win in the opener. Kyle Thompson was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs and Tanner Simons 2-for-4. Reliever Keenan Breen (4-0) notched the pitching win.
Wayne State scored two in the eighth to win the second game. Krier produced an RBI single and Jackson Petersen came through with the game-winning single. Krier finished 3-for-5 with two triples and Bodie Cooper 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
Breen was also the winning pitcher in the nightcap, although Kyle Kennebeck worked out of a jam in the ninth. Upper Iowa had runners at first and third with one out when Simons fielded a slow grounder and gunned down the tying run at the plate. Kennebeck struck out the last batter of the game looking.
Wayne State moved to 20-18 overall and 15-11 in the NSIC.
