The Sioux City practice located at 2730 Pierce St., Suite 300, offers orthopaedic surgery, general surgery, dermatology, plastic surgery, neurology, hand surgery, spine surgery and colorectal surgery specialties. Their team of physicians and surgeons is dedicated to individualized and personalized service and treatment.
Tri-State Specialists would like to introduce seven of their newest team members:
Dr. Michael Doarn
Dr. Michael Doarn is a hand/orthopaedic surgeon at Tri-State Specialists. Doarn, of Columbus Ohio, earned his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and performed his residency at the University of South Florida Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. He was fellowship trained at Rush University in Chicago in hand, upper extremity and microsurgery.
The board-eligible orthopaedic surgeon comes to Tri-State Specialists from his fellowship, bringing with him a passion for hand and upper extremity care.
Doarn mostly treats conditions such as carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel, fractures of the wrist and fingers, tendonitis, and hand and wrist arthritis. Some of the common procedures he performs are carpal tunnel release, fracture fixation, trigger finger release, upper extremity arthroplasty, and custom splinting and bracing.
Doarn serves with Dr. Aaron Althaus in providing consultant medical care for the Sioux City Bandits football team and, most recently, for Akron-Westfield Community School football. Doarn and Althaus go to the games, and attend to injuries with on-site X-rays and evaluations at the game. Any injury requiring therapy and surgery is handled at Tri-State Specialists' office.
"The Bandits are great players and great individuals. It's a lot of fun," he said.
Doarn said he enjoys his work as a hand/orthopaedic surgeon because he can spend a lot of time with patients.
"I can focus on education and help patients understand the diagnosis, and help them to know what their options are. I put an emphasis on quality care and recovery," he said.
Doarn said he chose to join Tri-State Specialists because of the patient mix, and his partners.
"It's really good. I see pediatric patients and adults and treat different conditions. Tri-State Specialists has a well-organized, cordial and productive group. I like being able to do the type of surgeries I like to do and see the patients I want to see," he said.
When Doarn's not working, he's watching and playing outdoor activities and sports. He is married to Choko, and they have one dog and two cats.
Dr. Aditya Gupta
Dr. Aditya Gupta specializes in bariatric, esophageal and general surgery at Tri-State Specialists. He received his medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), a medical college in Delhi, affiliated with the University of Delhi in India. He did his General Surgery residency at Providence Hospitals and Medical Centers in Michigan.
Gupta was fellowship trained in Advanced Foregut and Thoracic Surgery at the Swedish Medical Centre in Seattle, Wash., and a Laparoscopic Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship in Portland, Ore.
He came to Sioux City right after his two fellowships.
Gupta has been at Tri-State Specialists for almost three years. He treats obesity, gastroesophageal acid reflux, swallowing disorders, lung disorders, and gastric and esophageal cancers. He performs general surgery, performs myotomies to treat disorders of the esophagus, repairs hiatal hernias, and does bariatric surgery. His specialties are the laparoscopic sleeve and gastric bypass surgeries, along with revisional weight loss surgeries.
He chose to practice at Tri-State Specialists because of the many experienced doctors/surgeons, including Joe Morris, a general surgeon.
"I liked what I saw. In Dr. Morris I saw a mentor. In a practice, you need to start with an established surgeon. I thought he would help me out and he has," he said. "I also did the type of surgery they do here. I'm put to good use here."
In his spare time, Gupta enjoys watching sports, reading, hiking and listening to music. He is married to Hemlata Meena and they have a 15-month-old daughter, Aanya.
Dr. Adam Smith
Dr. Adam Smith specializes in plastic surgery at Tri-State Specialists. He earned his medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in Rootstown, Ohio, and did his residency at Michigan State University in East Lancing, Mich. He was fellowship trained at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Smith received his undergraduate degree with majors in biology and chemistry and minors in psychology, philosophy and statistics from Youngstown State University in 2000. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with distinction.
At Tri-State Specialists, Smith does a broad spectrum of plastic surgery, including cosmetic surgery, pediatrics, and cranial facial surgery.
"I do a lot of breast and body cosmetic surgery, such as neck lifts, facelifts, and eye surgery, but I also treat facial fractures, and cleft lips and palates," he said. "I also do a lot of management for wounds, such as pressure ulcers and burns."
A significant portion of his practice is pediatics, he said. His wife Tina is a pediatrician with Prairie Pediatrics in Sioux City. They have three children: Paul, 8; John, 5; and Ruth, 3.
Smith came to Sioux City because he and his wife wanted to relocate, and Tri-State Specialists was looking for a pediatric and plastic surgeon. He was most impressed by the experienced specialists in the practice and their acceptance of modern ways of doing most things.
"They're more malleable than I have seen before. Not only are they fantastic people, but they are willing to embrace new models of medicine that are coming down. This group has been forward thinking and progressive. That is why the practice has grown so quickly," he said.
He enjoys practicing pediatrics and plastic surgery because he can operate on everyone, regardless of age.
"I see people from all walks of life. Everyone is different. No patient will ever be the same. With plastic surgery, you're always using your technical skills and artistic abilities. It's about form and function. You can't have one without the other. It's fun for me to have that balance and approach patients in a unique way," he said.
Away from work, Smith likes to spend his time doing outdoor activities, including fishing and skiing. Other interest include computers, sculpting, playing guitar and singing, and photography.
Dr. Gokul Subhas
Dr. Gokul Subhas specializes in colorectal surgery at Tri-State Specialists. He earned his medical degree from Nagpur University in Nagpur, India.
Subhas is the only fellowship trained colorectal surgeon in Siouxland. He attended medical school in India and a residency in the United Kingdom before he came to the United States, where he did a seven-year surgical residency at St. John Providence Hospital in Detroit, followed by a colorectal surgery fellowship at Rutgers University, Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Jersey.
Subhas offers pure colorectal surgery in his elective and office practice. With so many advances in the medical field, he brings in the latest management practices for colorectal conditions, such as hemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease, anal fissures, anal pain, and more. He specializes in the management of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
"I do anything related to the colon and rectum, including both malignant and benign conditions, such as diverticular disease, colon cancer and rectal cancer," he said.
He also treats functional conditions, such as diarrhea, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Procedures he performs include hemorrhoidectomies to treat hemorrhoids, fistulotomies for anal fissures, colectomies to remove part of the colon and rectal surgeries. He performs colonoscopies, a screening/diagnostic test for colon and disorders.
Subhas came to the United States for more advanced training and decided to stay. He and Aditya Gupta did their residency together, and Gupta had started at Tri-State Specialists two years earlier.
"He told me there was no colorectal surgeon in Sioux City and that patients with complex colorectal conditions were referred to Sioux Falls, S.D. or Omaha. I wanted to work with him as a partner and help patients with my colorectal surgery expertise," Subhas said.
Subhas said as a colorectal surgeon he likes working with patients who have complex conditions and specializes in them.
"I can manage those types of things here. I offer more of an office-based practice for anorectal conditions that were not treated here before," he said.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, including his two boys, ages 7 and 4, watching Indian movies and traveling.
Dr. Aaron Althaus
Dr. Aaron Althaus, a Sioux City native and 2001 Bishop-Heelan High School graduate, specializes in hips, knees and shoulders at Tri-State Specialists. He treats arthritis, injuries and fractures, and practices general orthopaedics.
Althaus received his medical degree at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City. He did a residency at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City and completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction with the Insall Scott Kelly Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases, where he learned state-of-the-art techniques for managing injuries and arthritic conditions involving the hip, knee and shoulder.
"At ISK, I worked with some of the best knee surgeons in the country and was exposed to the philosophy and legacy of Dr. John Insall, who is regarded as the father of knee replacement surgery," Althaus said. "The young surgeons I worked with there were very good, and very busy. The NYU orthopaedics group at the Hospital for Joint Diseases worked with a bunch of people doing interesting, cutting-edge orthopaedic techniques.
During his fellowship, he received additional training in shoulder reconstruction, rotator cuff and labral surgery, as well as hip arthroscopy for the treatment of labral tears and hip impingement.
He has experience with all of the common approaches to the hip, including the direct anterior, lateral and posterior. With hip joint replacements, he takes an anterior approach to spare the muscle and decrease muscle injury, which decreases time in the hospital and aids in recovery.
"It has become much more popular in the country in the past 10 years," he said. "It's exciting."
In his spare time, Althaus spends a lot of time with family and friends. He is married to Annie, a speech therapist, and they have two children: Alex, 2 1/2, and Bennett, 10 months.
Althaus said he is happy to be back in Sioux City after finishing his fellowship and being able to practice his specialty at Tri-State Specialists.
"I like the people. The working environment is very collegial. I like having multiple specialists to consult with. It's a nice environment," he said.
Dr. Matthew H. Steele
Dr. Matthew Steele specializes in Plastic Surgery at Tri-State Specialists. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Florida in Gainsville and performed his internship and residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He was fellowship trained at the University of Florida College of Medicine.
He is double board certified in both plastic surgery and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

The most common procedures he performs include breast augmentations, tummy tucks and skin cancer removal/reconstruction on the nose.
Prior to joining the multi-specialty practice at Tri-State Specialists, Steele was in private practice for 4 1/2 years in Fort Worth, Texas, and taught plastic surgery techniques for 5 1/2 years at the University of Florida.
He came to Sioux City and joined Tri-State Specialists because he saw potential.
"I was looking for a smaller community, and Sioux City is a good community. I saw this as a good opportunity for me," he said.
At Tri-State Specialists, he enjoys the variety of work he gets to do. "It's like pieces of a puzzle you have to fix," he said. "That's what I like about surgery. You come up with a solution to a problem and fix it. You're not spending all of your time in the office. People come to you because they need surgery. I like to be in the operating room."
Steele has received many awards and recognition for his expertise in cosmetic surgery, including Top Doctor, in the Fort Worth Texas Magazine 4 years in a row, RealSelf.com Top 100 for 2015-2016, and membership in The American Socity for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Outside of work, Steele likes to spend time with his family, golf, and work out. He is married to Keri and they have three children: Tyler, 20; Isabella, 11; and Samuel, 10.
