1. Something to crow about
For the past 38 years, Wayne, Nebraska has been making scratch by celebrating feathery farm fowl during its annual Chicken Show. This year's festivities will be taking place Friday through Sunday (July 13 - 15). From a Cluck Cluck golf tournament to the world-renowned chicken crowing contest, the good folks of Wayne have elevated this mostly flightless bird to a higher run on the pecking order. Hey, is anyone hungry or is it just us?
2. Submission moves
Sporting events taking place in cages aren't known for subtlety. After all, chess and polo combatants aren't contained inside a locked enclosure. However, fans of "King of the Cage: Impending Attack" aren't looking for subtlety. Nope, they'll be eyeballing action with plenty of punch, beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday (July 14) at WinnaVegas Casino Resort, Sloan, Iowa.
3. Watch the 'Boyd'
Please don't hate on Incubus lead singer Brandon Boyd as the group gets up for their Hard Rock Battery Park concert at 8 p.m. Saturday (July 14). Sure, Boyd has the good looks of a movie star and the mane of a Greek God but he doesn't deserve your jealous derision. Wait, the dude just celebrated his 42nd birthday and can easily pass for being a decade younger? OK, we're back to hating on Brandon Boyd!
4. Showing their (Iowa) Roots
Critics have called the Iowa-based band King of the Tramps as representing "Whiskey Gospel" and "Midwestern Roots Rock." Check out this royal quartet of musicians when they perform a Downtown Live concert, at 6 p.m. Thursday (July 12) on the lawn of the Sioux City Public Museum, 607 Fourth St.
5. Time to scrum
Rugby is a sport that involves hookers, balls and scrumming while wearing the style of shirt you wore in elementary school. Also, it's reportedly one of the most popular games in the entire freakin' world. See some of the area's roughest ruggers compete during the River-Cade Rugfest Rugby Tournament, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday (July 14) at Ickey Nickel Bar & Grill, 4700 41st St.
6. Movies under the stars
Even though it features Ben Stiller as one of its stars and boasts a screenplay by Judd Apatow, we have literally no memory of 1995's "Heavy Weights." We might as well check it out since "Heavy Weights" will be shown at 9 p.m. Saturday (July 14) at the Grandview Park Bandshell as part of Sioux City's Movie in the Park series.
