Whew! We're finally into November, one of the best months of the year.
What? It is one of the best months! OK, sure, I might be a little bit biased since I was born in November, but think about how many cool things are going on this month. The leaves have turned, we're right in the middle of football season and the brisk fall weather has made wearing sweatshirts a must.
Need I mention the glorious Thanksgiving? Or the Black Friday shopping? (You all complain about it, but I know deep down you enjoy shopping at the wee hours of the morning.)
Plus, November is the time when we all start getting hyped for holidays!
If you need anymore convincing, let's take a look at some not-so-well-known November holidays to celebrate this month:
SANDWICH DAY - NOV. 3
Who doesn't love a good sandwich? It may be a boring meal compared to something like Beef Wellington, but the love for sandwiches comes from their simplicity. Honestly, I just want an excuse to eat a Nutty Bird at Pierce Street Coffee Works or a Charlie Boy at Miles Inn.
NACHOS DAY - NOV. 6
Clearly my stomach is writing this Final Say so far... but nachos are pretty darn tasty. Especially since Sioux City has so many great Mexican restaurants offering their own take on the chips-n-cheese snack. Personally, I like mine packed with so many toppings I need to eat it with a fork in public, or with a bib by myself.
WORLD FREEDOM DAY - NOV. 9
While I expect some folks may see this day to enact their rights and freedoms, it's actually one to contemplate on as its preference is reflecting on places that don't have the same freedoms. It's something we all kind of take for granted every once in a while. It's a celebration of liberty. Nothing wrong with that!
WORLD KINDNESS DAY - NOV. 13
Sometimes we can get caught up in negativity, whether it's in a Twitter war, in the depths of Facebook comments threads or a heated argument between peers with different ideals. World Kindness Day is a reminder to step away from that negativity and just genuinely do something nice for someone else.
WORLD TOILET DAY - NOV. 19
OK, this entry doesn't really help my argument, but I just wanted to point out to you all that there is, indeed, a World Toilet Day. Granted, it actually has a more serious side to it by bringing awareness to sanitation issues around the world. But I bet you were snickering a bit, too. Remember to flush!
BUY NOTHING DAY - NOV. 24
Hilariously enough, this day falls on Black Friday, a day of mass consumerism -- which Buy Nothing Day advocates against. I really have no opinions on consumerism, but I do think there is something to learn from not buying anything for one whole day. Thinking about the value of money and how you actually spend your cash can be rather eye-opening.
STAY HOME BECAUSE YOU'RE WELL DAY - NOV. 30
This just got a little ridiculous. The name alone is sure to cause some eye rolls. But, hey, what's taking one sick day going to do? Unless there comes a time when you really need that sick day. But... staying home is nice. Hmm. I'll think about this one.
