How can you give an All-American bacon cheeseburger a Mediterranean twist?

Well, slapping a quarter-pound patty inside a lightly-toasted ciabatta bun can't hurt.

At least that's what Wendy's is doing with its new Ciabatta Bacon Cheeseburger, which the national chain introduced in December.

The burger -- which has 670 calories -- comes in a $4.79 single and a $6.29 double (two patties).

Scheduled to be on Wendy's menu until March, this limited-time burger is topped with roasted tomatoes, a fresh spring mix, natural Asiago cheese, applewood-smoked bacon and a creamy rosemary garlic aioli.

However, the star of a the show is the broad, flat and freshly made ciabatta. Literally meaning "slipper" in Italian, a ciabatta should be as soft and comfy as your favorite piece of bedroom footwear.

But do you really want to eat something named after a shoe?

Hmm, this seems like a case for our team of Weekender taste-testers. We'll see if this doughy burger will wilt to the hype.

WHAT'S YOUR INITIAL IMPRESSION?

Visually, a top-notch burger with a nice-looking bun.

HOW DOES IT TASTE?

The patty was puny, but the aioli gives it a kick.

CIABATTA: IS IT A GIMMICK OR ESSENTIAL TO THE BURGER?

The ciabatta gives it an international flair.

Sweet Gertie

WHAT'S YOUR INITIAL IMPRESSION?

Looks like a gourmet burger.

HOW DOES IT TASTE?

The sauce is tangy but it could use more beef. The bacon and sauce overwhelm the burger.

CIABATTA: IS IT A GIMMICK OR ESSENTIAL TO THE BURGER?

It's a gimmick. Unlike Wendy's pretzel bun burger, it doesn't have the same kick.

Looks classier than most. A step up from the average burger.

HOW DOES IT TASTE?

Really good. The tangy cheese sauce and bread combo is really good. But the spring mix did get a little slimy.

It adds a lot to the sandwich. Very tasty.

HOW MANY CALORIES DO YOU THINK IT HAS?

Many. Enough that I don't want to know.
