1. Thirsty (for music) Thursdays
Downtown Live is back for another epic series of live music entertainment in Sioux City. Kicking off the series is a performance by “thrashgrass” band Split Lip Rayfield, and, oh, what a performance it will be. Did you ever think it was possible to mix country, bluegrass, metal and a tinge of punk into one band? Well prepare yourself for a wild night. See the first Downtown Live show 6 p.m. Thursday (June 7) on the lawn of the Sioux City Public Museum.
2. Jerk it
Get your mind out of the gutter! We’re talking beef jerky! For crying out loud, people. Anyways… let’s get down to business. Folks, there’s a homemade jerky competition going on at Marty’s Tap. How awesome is that? Competitors must make a minimum of one-pound of jerky (meat or vegetarian) for both judges and bar patrons to sample. Come be a part of Marty’s 1st Annual Jerk-Off 1 p.m. Sunday (June 10) at Marty’s Tap. Yes, that is what the contest is called. And we just got away with printing that.
3. Two days left of summer
Well… two days left of 107.1 KISS FM’s Sioux City Summer Fest, to be exact. If you haven’t had the chance to visit this past weekend, you still have a couple days left to do so. Grab some food, listen to music, get on the carnival rides and enjoy your typical fair games at this annual festival. Show up after work 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday (June 7 & 8) at the Tyson Events Center. You gotta go!
4. Top o’ the mornin’
Or, rather, evening. Celebrate Ireland’s rich cultural and musical heritage with Celtic Woman, an all-female ensemble that combines the finest musical talent with jaw dropping stage productions. The outcome? A truly unique live experience. See Celtic Woman perform 7:30 p.m. Friday (June 8) at the Sioux City Orpheum Theatre.
5. Rock out: Sioux City style
If you’ve picked up a Weekender in the past, I don’t know, 100 years or so, you’ll know that we have a soft spot for local music. And that’s because local music is friggin’ awesome. Prove it? Well, fine! How about a rock show featuring nothing but local acts on the bill? Get crazy with Thick Mistress, Arch Your Back Girl, My Enemy and Trash Top Monkeys 8 p.m. Friday (June 8) at The Marquee.
6. Is there a whiskey game, too?
There's drama afoot at Shot in the Dark Productions. Currently playing at the local theatre is "The Gin Game," a two-person play and winner of the 1978 Pulitzer Prize. Only two people, though? That's right. But Shot in the Dark is the perfect place to host an intimate drama. See the show at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (June 8 & 9); 3 p.m. Sunday (June 10); and 7 p.m. Monday (June 11) at the Evelyn Larson Theatre.
